This song was written as the COVID 19 pandemic began locking everything down and HAAP began to see that shows would be lost.
John thought how love and relationships were similar to a virus, that you could “catch” and wrote the beginnings of “Stay Back”, which was expanded upon by Shannon.
It initially had a dance/disco vibe. As CC started to work with it he morphed it into a shuffle feel giving it a much more bluesy character. In the spirit of wanting to explore a broad range of genres (or at least feels) on this project, we went with this new feel for the song. CC wrote a new bridge section, finished a rough work up of the full backing track (ending up being the final version in the end) and passed it back to John and Shannon to finish the lyric.

Lyrics:
Stay Back
Don’t you sneak up from behind
Like something in the night
Better leave on all your lights
And let me look you in the eyes
As you tell me all those lines
That you’ve done a hundred times
I should heed the warning signs
Couldn’t stop you if I tried
Oh no no no
Oooo – think I’m going to insist
That you stay back
It’s in our best interest
Your love is so infectious
So keep your distance
I don’t wanna to catch it, no
I don’t wanna catch your love
Think I might have lost my mind
Lettin’ you in my life
You wanna put me in a bind
Sure my hands are tied
Your tricks won’t work on me this time
Startin’ to see the light
It’s gonna go my way tonight
I’ll do what I like
Oh no no no OooOO
Think I’m going to insist
That you stay back
It’s in our best interest
Your love is so infectious
So keep your distance
I don’t wanna to catch it, no
I don’t wanna catch your
Your love it chills me to the bone
Can’t let you get me alone
Oh – won’t you stay back
Won’t you stay back
When it’s over it’s not over
Like a book when started all over
Won’t you stay back
Won’t you stay back
Another verse another chapter
The sadness turns to laughter
Won’t you stay back
Won’t you stay back
Ain’t no need to be clairvoyant
You know my heart
You know you stole it
Oooo – think I’m going to insist
That you stay back
It’s in our best interest
Your love is so infectious
So keep your distance
I don’t wanna catch it, no
I don’t wanna catch your
I don’t wanna catch it, no
I don’t wanna catch your
I don’t wanna catch it, no
I don’t wanna catch your
Love
